West Mobile Academy is a day treatment program operated by BayPointe Hospital in collaboration with the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) as well as Chickasaw, Saraland, and Satsuma City School Systems. It provides a therapeutic classroom environment and structured day treatment setting for elementary, middle, and high school students who receive special education services but are unable to maintain appropriate behaviors in a public school setting.
Criteria for West Mobile Academy:
- Current enrollment with MCPSS or city school system
- Minimum IQ of 70
- Must qualify for special education services in one of the following areas: emotional disability, specific learning disability, autism, developmental delay, or other impairment.
- Exhibit any combination of at least five of the following behaviors: attention-seeking, poor personal boundaries, poor social skills, poor self-control, aggressive, hyperactivity, defiance towards authority, manipulative, withdrawal/depression/anxiety, temper tantrums.
Students receive:
- Academic instruction by certified teachers
- Individual, family and group therapy
- Cooperative skills training
- Basic living skills
- Activity therapy
- Psychiatric assessment and medication management
- School system transportation
- Behavior-focused summer camp
