Children’s Mental Health Statistics

A total of 13 percent to 20 percent of children living in the United States experience a mental illness in a given year, according to U.S. Surgeon General and Centers for Disease Control surveys. CDC surveillance from 1994 through 2011 has shown these conditions to be on the increase. Further, nearly 5 million American children and adolescents suffer from a serious mental illness, which means the illness significantly interferes with their day-to-day lives.

The exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, but research suggests that a combination of factors, including heredity, biology, psychological trauma, and environmental stress, may be involved. To maintain basic mental health and wellness, AltaPointe’s professionals believe that children need unconditional love from their caregivers, opportunities to play and explore, teachers that encourage, appropriate instruction and boundaries, and praise.
