Governor Riley appoints Schlesinger to SHCC

Gov. Bob Riley has appointed Tuerk Schlesinger, CEO of Mobile Mental Health, to the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC). Schlesinger has led the 650-employee mental health organization since 1998. He is a member of the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare/Association of Behavioral Health Management, Region IV Advisory Council, Council of Community Mental Health Boards Executive Committee and president of Southwest Alabama Medical Preparedness, as well as many other board positions.

The SHCC advises the State Health Planning and Development Agency on matters relating to health planning and resource development and performs other functions delegated to it in the area of health planning.

The newly appointed State Health Coordinating Council (SHCC) recently held its first meeting in Montgomery and reappointed Judge John Rochester as chairman, as well as Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin as vice chairman. Since the meeting was primarily organizational, there was no action taken; members heard a presentation of the Alabama ethics law and their responsibilities as SHCC members and were asked to sign up for various committees to begin work on the State Health Plan.

Also, Gov. Riley announced five new appointments to SHCC. They include: Marlene Hart - provider representative, Baldwin County; Tuerk Schlesinger - provider representative, Baldwin County; Wayne Gibson - consumer representative, Pike County; Steve Dampier - consumer representative, Baldwin County; Sontonia Stephens - consumer representative, Tuscaloosa County
