International mental health leaders visit Mobile Mental Health as part of leadership exchange program

Three international mental health professionals, two from England and one from New Zealand, visited Mobile Mental Health recently as part of the International Initiative of Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL). Tuerk Schlesinger, CEO of Mobile Mental Health hosted the IIMHL visitors for three days. Joe Toy, CEO of Bluegrass Regional Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board in Kentucky, and a IIMHL charter member, said that he “recognized some time ago that Tuerk [Schlesinger] and his center stood out as a unique and very capable provider organization. Tuerk is well ahead of the curve as a visionary leader.”

Toy has earned a reputation for Bluegrass as the nation’s leading mental health provider. He and three members of his leadership team also visited MMH.

The visitors toured BayPointe Hospital and MMH Adult Outpatient Services at Gordon Smith Drive. IIMHL visitors met with key MMH leaders to learn more MMH’s leadership and management philosophy and Mobile County and Alabama’s mental health services system.

Since 2002, the IIMHL has linked key leaders in the mental health field who can collaborate and build international partnerships. Benefits of such partnerships may include joint programs and service development, staff exchanges and sabbaticals, sharing of managerial and operational expertise, research, and peer consultation.
